Description:
D&RGW K-37 490 at Alamosa, Colorado on August 17, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 490 was built by Baldwin in 1902 as standard gauge D&RG 2-8-0 Class 190 Number 1114. It was renumbered during 1924 to Class C-41 1014. During 1928 it was rebuilt at D&RGW's Burnham Shops to narrow gauge K-37 490. During 1962 it was retired, giving up its smokebox to Number 492 after that locomotive struck a large rock near Navajo, New Mexico on August 6, 1963. It is seen loaded on flat car Number 6478.

Title:
D&RGW 2-8-2 Class K-37 494
Description:
D&RGW 2-8-2 Class K-37 494 and 491 at Alamosa, Colorado on August 17, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Locomotives in the 490-499 number series were built as standard gauge 2-8-0 Consolidations by Baldwin in 1902. They were rebuilt to narrow gauge 2-8-2's in D&RGW's own Burnham Shops between 1928-1930. None of the prominently pictured locomotives would run again. Number 490 (c/n 20695) was dismantled in 1963-64, it's on a flatcar in this photo. The smokebox went to 492, I don't know about the rest of it. Number 494 (c/n 20748) is on static display at Antonito, Colorado. Number 491 (c/n 20829) is at the Colorado Railroad Museum, property of the Colorado Historical Society.
